Product Description

This is a great looking, authentic barn beam mantel. It is white oak with a natural, warm brown color. The top and bottom edges are light as the sapwood graces the corners. The sapwood is just below the bark and does not contain the same tannins as the heartwood. As such, it doesn’t take one the same great natural color. The choppy nature is from original ax work taking a round tree and making a square beam.

This mantel has several filled mortise holes. The mortise holes were drilled out and then squared off with hand chisel work. That was probably 125 years or so ago.

This beam has a 76 inch face, however we left the 4 inch long tenon in place to make it 80. We can leave it or cut it off — either way is fine. The price is the same either way. Also, if you look at the pictures of the bottom, there is a little notch at about 74 inches. This may be a dictating factor as to where to cut the end off.

This beam came from a barn in Southwest Wisconsin. It dates back to the late 1800s — back when we had Indian head pennies, Morgan dollars, and even gold pieces in circulation.

THIS BEAM IS OVERWEIGHT AND WILL NEED TO SHIP VIA LTL TRUCK FREIGHT. Estimated shipping $200. However, please contact us for an accurate quote.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
