This is a just a nice beautiful mantel beam. It comes from a historic flour mill turned barn in Paynesville, Minnesota. This particular beam was bandsawn. That fairly unusual, usually we run into beams that are either sawn with a huge circle blade (circle sawn) or flattened with an ax (hand hewn).

This particular beam started out as something more about 7×10. We cut off about an inch to remove some of the rotting surface. The top is the cut side and shows the slightly lighter interior that is more typical of white oak. The front and bottom show the beautiful patina color that develops over time in a barn environment. On the bottom, you’ll see plenty of nail holes but also a hint of the bandsawing.

We applied a finish of Rubio Monocoat to give the mantel durability and just the right natural sheen. But, it still has this great, natural touchable quality.

We gathered a collection of beams from a historical Flour Mill later turned barn in Paynesville, Minnesota. The Paynesville Historical Society writes, “Wheat was the number one crop. This crop brought in the money. The Applegren Mill at Old Town (Paynesville) was world famous. John Peter Applegren purchased the mill in 1869. It had been a grist mill but was converted of the grinding of flour by Applegren. He produced Paynesville Rolled Flour which was a favorite with housewives. John’s Flour Mill, as it was affectionately called in Paynesville, also produced a very special flour called Golden Drop Flour. In 1893, he took 50 pounds of it in a pure silk bag to the Chicago World’s Fair. He won a gold medal and a scroll.”

I believe that this beam was part of an addition that was later added to the original building. It is still probably 100 years old, but not quite 1860’s kind of vintage.

This mantel beam is priced at $100 per LF at 71.5 inches. We can cut to any size and reduce the price by $8.33 per inch up to a $100 discount. This one can ship via FedEx Gnd for $65.

The tag is for Brillo Soap Pads — More Shine in Every Pad. This ad is from about 1951 from the “Woman’s Home Companion” magazine which ceased publishing in 1957.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
