This fireplace mantel was made from the last last couple pieces out of an old local barn. There was a long span of beams that ran the length of the barn. (Probably about 60 feet). The span was composed of several segments. The angle cuts are original and it is how they joined the long beams together to cover the full 60 foot run). They call this a scarf joint. Our blacksmith added some metal elements that are both functional and decorative.

The reclaimed white oak shows off what patina really means. White oak starts out as a wheatish tan, but in the right barn environment it can go as dark as black coffee — every bit as dark as black walnut. But not all white oaks will go this dark. It really depends on the tannin content in the wood — which is a feature of the growing conditions and the specific species of wood within the white oak family. What’s neat is if you look at the ends, you can see the original color and how the color circles the outside and has penetrated into the cracks. We sand pretty aggressively on this beam, but we left some ghosts of the old, original circle saw marks. We’ll toss on another coat of finish to shine this one up just a bit before we ship it out.

Rectangular shaped beams a relatively uncommon but it’s great when we can find them. This is indeed an original 6×8 with full original patina. This is not a cut 8×8 with a refinished side.

This beam comes from an old dairy barn located between Norwood, Minnesota and Bongards, Minnesota. It was on what is known as a “Century Farm.” This is a farm that has been in a family for over 100 years. In the picture, you can see an old colorized photo of the farm, including the barn. One section of this old barn had old log cabin timbers that had been re-used as “sleeper joists.” So these beams were already on their second re-use, now going on their 3rd.

A hardwax oil finish has been applied, but no stain has been applied. Pretty amazing all natural color.

While we’re happy to cut this one down in size, I’m sorry but we can’t reduce the price on it. This particular style has been very popular and our supply is limited.

This beam is priced at $100/LF. We can cut the beam down to any length and reduce the price by $8.33 per inch, up to a maximum discount of $100. This beam ships via FedEx for our flat rate price of $65.

The tag on it is from an old 1940s magazine. Forgetful? Robinson Reminders — A pocket memory system. I guess this was the predecessor to the iPhone.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
