Product Description

This rustic mantel has lots of things going on. The face is asymmetrical with some hand hewn warm browns on the right tapering down to lighter tones and sapwood to the left. Sapwood isn’t always the best color, but in this case, it is very warm and nice. Sapwood is the lighter colored wood just below the bark. It’s presence indicates that they used a smaller tree or perhaps higher up of a larger tree. Back in the day, the settlers used what they had available; it wasn’t like picking wood out at Home Depot.

All of those notches you see are ax marks, or hand hewing, from the 1800s when an original settler swung an ax to make a square log out of round log. We have left the original tenon on the left side, but it could be cut off. The tenon fit into a “mortise pocket” in another beam in the barn. The mantel measures 59 3/4 before the tenon and 62 1/4 including the tenon. It is kind of neat, you can see the original scribe marks where the old craftsman indicated where the tenon would go.

This old beam came from a old barn near SW Wisconsin. It dates back to the late 1800s when that area was being settled.

We can cut this beam down and reduce the price by $8.33 per inch up to a $100 discount.

The tag on this one is wild. Back around Christmas time in the 1960s, some marketer had the brilliant idea to market Hot Dr Pepper to compete with hot cider and hot cocoa. Did they really think about it? Or even try it? I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t sound so tasty to me.

You can shop some available mantel beams and thinner mantel shelves on this website.

However, our website here only contains a small number of all of the mantels that we have in stock.
We are literally a mom-and-pop shop that does lots of custom work. We often just don’t quite find enough time to update this website regularly.
We have nearly 150 finished mantels and another 500 or so unfinished pieces in stock at any time that can be viewed with other links.

We also do lots of custom work. If we understand what you are seeking, we can find and create that magic piece.

Please contact us for a full list and personal recommendations. We’re happy to chat and find a great piece for you.

We work with a great local blacksmith to add metal straps and other ornamentation to our mantels. He is the real deal — coal forged and hand hammered. The metalwork has great color and tight fit. Nothing machined. We can start with a finished mantel you find on our site, or we can start with raw stock for more options.

Here are a few examples of the hundreds that we have crafted over the years. We can work together to create something unique. You can also browse our Mantels with Metalwork page.
