This white oak piece has a cut top with a hand hewn face and bottom. Yes, we suggest that the bottom it more interesting than the top. More than likely, you're sitting in a chair by the fire and can't see the top side of the mantel.
The hand hewn sides have great, large felling ax marks spaced wide apart. This is a less typical hand hewn piece. Most of our material is either hand-hewn on just 2 sides, or has more aggressive hewing throughout. One of the old lumberjacks could probably tell you if it was a winter or a summer cut because of how this is hewn.
The cut site is very nice quality -- full of rays from being quarter sawn. It will be stunning once sanded and worked.
Note, the wood was a little wet when the pictures were taken, so it looks a little "sloppier" than it will once dry.
The other half of this timber was just sold. Hopefully we'll have finished pictures of that soon.
