Here's an approximately 18x26 log building for sale just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota in Waconia, Minnesota. This building was last used as a granary, but evidence seems to suggest that it was built as a barn. The big clue is the large spacing between the logs on the second floor. This spacing is typically left un-chinked so that air can flow and dry the stored hay. As time passed, the building was sealed up for use as grainary. The tin that you see throughout is actually the backs of very large advertising road signs such as Best Western, etc.. We've yet to discover all of what's there.
From what we've been able to gather, the place has been a granary since at least 1937 when the current owners took over the land. We're still researching the rest of the history. Based on local history, this place was probably built between about 1880 and 1900. In May of 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act. The act provided settlers with 160 acres of surveyed public land after payment of a filing fee and five years of continuous residence. Property acquired via the Homestead Act with Lincoln's signature is typical of the area.
While this building has most recently been used as a granary, it would re-model nicely into a log cabin. It's a treat in the respect that the first floor only has 2 cut outs -- a window and an oversized door. The second floor has only 1 window.
