This rare and beautiful house, known as the Southworth House, was standing in Rohrersville, MD and has been disassembled and is currently in storage. The Washington County Historic Society has estimated it to be one of the first houses built in Washington County. Due to its building style and unusual features, such as the 9’ high ceilings and ornate main staircase, it was most probably built by (wealthy) German settlers around 1792. The logs were well protected with 4 layers of siding which is why they are still in such good condition. All the logs have all been tagged for re-assembly and drawings, photos and a video of it being disassembled are available for reconstruction. Here are some specifics and features:
25FT x 30FT 1st and 2nd floors, making 1500 sq. ft in total – 2 full stories – loft would be additional space.
Hand hewn white oak logs from old growth trees.
Many logs have 20 inch high faces.
Continuous (unbroken) logs along end walls (originally had internal chimney, but could be made external).
Two original staircases are included – main staircase is unusually ornate for the era – 2nd staircase up to loft.
Two original exterior doors included.
Includes a few interior doors, most window sashes (6/9 windows on 1st floor), subframes some original flooring and various door frames and rafter members, etc. The Summer beam and floor joists for 2nd floor are very useable. Also included are the logs from the old smokehouse (in "OK" shape)
