 This is a hand-crafted bench by Gary Kaufmann. He started with a big ol' gray handhewn slice from a 1870 log cabin beam. The original beam was probably near 20 feet long. He sanded it, worked it, and polished it until he came up with this great bench. You can still see the original hand hewn marks from a settler in the 1800's trying to get a home up. The wood is Rock Elm. Rock elm is great because it has extremely tight growth rings -- sometimes 40 to the inch. Rock Elm is virtually unavailable in the modern market. The bench has been finished with several coats of a water based polyurethane.
