We're not real fond of staining, but this particular
technique works pretty well. We use "asphaltum," which is
basically tar thinned with mineral spirits. We then
apply a couple coats of spray poly. The use of asphatum
dates back thousands of years. It is a technique that is
quietly used in many old woodshops.
The wood for this mantel comes from an old 1850's Minnesota barn. 1850s
is very early in Minnesota history. In fact, Minnesota
did not achieve Statehood until 1858. The original
settlers and owners of this barn were technically
squatting on Indian land.
