 At almost 5 feet, this little mantel has spunk. It’s a nice squared off little gem with lots of original patina and wavy weathered grains. It’s white oak from an old log barn in Hackers Creek in West Virginia. If we look hard enough, we might even be able to find the exact beam. The log barns dated back to the mid-1800s – bit older than most of the stuff we find here in Minnesota. Oh yes… that big ol’ hole... Well, it’s right there on the face of this one. Kinda like the nose on you or me. I didn’t think filling it with wood plug would look just right. So, it’s just waiting for someone’s creativity to fill ’er up. Think… song bird taxidermy (I looked on Etsy.com and I’m not too sure that’s a good option), a little Beany Baby, bottom of an old green glass Coke bottle, a picture frame, an old tile, colored glass, a hook, etc... Sneak a little dead mouse in there, and your wife will love you forever (grin). I’m sure someone will come up with just the right touch. I mention an old Coke bottle. Some of the old time sawyers have collections on their walls of the items they’ve hit in logs – pipes, nails, coke bottles, guns, and pitch forks just to name a few.
