We just don’t get enough of these beams in. This is a square-ish mantel that had been hand hewn on all 4 sides. Back in the day, someone worked with and adze or broad ax to square off all 4 sides of a beam. We find a fair amount of 2-side hand hewn log cabin timbers, but not nearly as many 4-sided. Also, this is a naturally dark white oak beam. It has lots of neat character and color.
Note, because of some original rot considerations on the back side, this mantel is taller than it is wide. It's 7.5in tall and 6in deep.
