 This fireplace mantel is a nice timber from an old log cabin in Wisconsin. The top side was exposed to the elements and became extremely weathered. A large knot flows over the top and reveals itself as a small knot on the face. The bottom edge has a slight, pleasant curve – it’s the sapwood from the edge of the tree. The face was originally round, but full of rot. We cut is square and worked it up. To warm up the cut face, we applied ammonia. It interacts with the tannins in the wood to create a great color -- much more natural looking than stain. The bottom shows original ax marks from the 1800s. About the tag: An old car advertisement from Central Rambler in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the early 1960s. Wouldn’t it be nice to buy a nearly new car for $2000?
