 Great Hand Hewn Red Elm Fireplace Mantel Beam from an old barn near Norwood Young America, Minnesota. It probably dates back to the late 1800s. The piece of wood is on its third or forth life. It was barn that was filled with beam that were reused from previous structures. The barn was certainly a mish-mash of different beams. It has both filled and unfilled mortise holes. The unfilled ones could be filled by request. The open holes are position on what is likely the top or bottom of the mantel. There are also some original scribe marks where a carpenter 100 plus years ago indicated cuts and holes. The tenon is not included in the length. That can be cut off too.
