White Oak is popular these days with its hard surface and lighter color. It's fun to look for occasional prime peices of quartersawn oak with rays that cross the grain in tiger strip or sun burst patterns.
Old White Oak is particularly good for developing a wonderful patina, or unique natural color, over time. There's no substitute for the real thing.
Our reclaimed white oak tends to have intersting knots as well as darker cracks and nail holes. The picture above even has a shotgun blast and a few BBs left over.
Janka Scale: 1360 (5% greater than red oak)
