Granary reclaimed Douglas Fir shiplap siding can be a real treat. If the material is well aged, but kept dry, it develops a wonderful deep auborn color. This is called patina. We re-mill the tongue-and-groove, but leave the sanding of the face up to the installers so that they can control the final color. A light sanding will go a long way. A heavy sanding and the wonderful color disappears.

In many Midwest homes from the 1920's and 1930's, tongue-and-groove Fir flooring was used in the non-public areas of the house such as the upstairs, bedrooms, and pantries. Hardwoods, such as oak and maple, were used in the more public portions of the house such as the living room. We carry truely reclaimed flooring material from houses for the perfect match for restoration.

Historically, Douglas Fir was very popular as a large building construction material because of its huge, straight length as well as its overall strength-to-weight ratio. In the old warehouses of the early 1900's, it's not uncommon to see 24 inch x 24 inch timbers that are 40 to 50 feet long. Interestingly, most of the pre-1900 barns in central Minnesota and Western Wisconsin are not Douglas Fir because the original settlers used the local hardwood forests rather than having Fir transported.

This flooring is 3/4 inch thick tongue-and-grove wood flooring.

Janka Scale: 660 (~50% softer than red oak)
