Red Elm is an interesting wood. Sometimes the interior quarter saw grains are incredibly straight. (the joints on a good red elm tables are almost undetectable). And other times, the grains of the wood are weaving in and out of each other like braided hair. This mantel is one of those braided hair times. The topside of this mantel was the outside of a log barn wall. The outside got all weathered up while the inside stayed very clean. By sanding down quite a bit, we reveal the wood amidst the alligator skin of the weathered wood.
The original log was from near a place called Howard Lake, Minnesota.
